Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique identification number allotted to a person intending to become a director in a company. In other words, a person aspiring to form a new Company or intending to become a Director in an existing Company needs to obtain Director Identification Number beforehand.
DIN number is valid for life and is allotted to only individuals. The important feature of DIN is that a person can start or become a part of multiple companies using this number; hence no need to get several DINs. The Concept of DIN was originated with the view of generating a data base of directors of Companies registered with MCA. It is also used to track the Directors as well as Companies or LLPs where a person is appointed as Director or was previously appointed as such.
Procedure for obtaining the Director Identification Number (DIN)
Some points to be noted while filing application for getting DIN:
- In case of Address Proof: If Indian National then proof should not be older than 2 months and If Foreign National then proof should not be older than 1 year.
- In case of person residing out of India, the supporting documents shall be attested by the Consulate of the Indian Embassy or Public Notary of their Country.
- All proofs must be self-certified.
- DIN needs to be certified by Professional i.e by either Company Secretary/ Chartered Accountant/ Cost and Works Accountant (In whole time practise) Or Company Secretary (In whole time employment) in case applicant is being appointed as director in a Company where Company Secretary is in employment.
If the DIN is certified by Practising Professional then automatically DIN will be allotted after confirming that it not an identified as duplicate DIN. The form is then sent for appraisal at DIN cell and can be rejected only if any reasons of incompleteness are found in the same.

2.Who is authorised to allot DIN?
Central Government (Office of Regional Director (Northern Region), Ministry of Corporate Affairs) allots the DIN upon processing the form DIR-3 filed by the applicant. Further person who is appointed as a director upon filing form INC-29 will be issued a DIN by the approving authority (Central Registration Centre).

Please note that Income Tax PAN is mandatory in case of Indian applicants hence applicant details (name, father’s name, date of birth) should match with the PAN details. DIN application fee of Rs. 500/- is payable via online payment mode i.e Internet Banking/ Credit Card/ Debit Card.

6.What Procedure needs to be followed in case of change in particulars of Director?
Director is required to download and fill up eForm DIR-6 for such changes and follow the same common process for uploading the form as mentioned above for eForm DIR-3. The requested change is taken into consideration on verification of the proof enclosed with the application form. In case of change in the applicant’s name, gazette notification is must with form DIR-6. Married women, who are having Id proof with their maiden name, can submit marriage certificate along with application.
7.My DIN application has been identified as Potential Duplicate.What does it mean?
If the contents specified in the DIN form matches with particulars of any other person having valid DIN, then this application shall be identified as a potential duplicate case and shall then be processed by DIN Cell.
